Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or pelvic organs. This tissue responds to hormonal changes and can cause severe menstrual pain, heavy bleeding, inflammation, and fertility challenges. Since the tissue cannot shed normally, it can form scar tissue and adhesions over time. Endometriosis often requires medical or surgical treatment.
